The two lectures will provide an overview of some of the key developments in detective fiction from the 1890s to the 1930s.

The contemporaries of Sherlock Holmes

There were many detectives whose authors tried, with varying degrees of success, to step away from the shadow of the mighty Sherlock.  From Arthur Morrison’s painstaking Martin Hewitt to Baroness Orczy’s ground-breaking Lady Molly of Scotland Yard, a richly diverse gallery of inspired creations helped make London the capital city of crime fiction, along with anti-heroes such as the confidence trickster Romney Pringle and the terrifying Madame Sara.

Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers in London

Although Conan Doyle’s final Holmes stories were written in the 1920s, they were set back in a vanished past. 100 years ago Christie and Sayers were bringing their detectives into the post-Great War world and this lecture looks at their use of London in the 1920s and 30s and how they placed Hercule Poirot, and Lord Peter Wimsey in the heart of the great city; a revealing investigation in itself.

David Rosier is a chartered Insurer and Fellow of the Assurance Medical Society with a specialisation in medical risk assessment. He spent 25 years working in Asia as an author and lecturer. While living in Hong Kong, he assembled a vast collection of Imperial and related textiles and costume accessories.

However much his name is tossed around the media today, the life of Monet remains one of the most uplifting and inspiring stories in art history. Attacked, misunderstood or often simply ignored for nearly thirty years, he lived to see his ideas transform the way in which we see nature.  This study day follows his career from his childhood on the Seine Estuary to the hard times in Paris and Argenteuil to the triumphant times in Giverny.  It looks at the battles of his techniques, his battles with officialdom, his private life with friends and family and the extraordinary vision that is his legacy to the world.

Read fine art Magdelene College Cambridge and has been a lecturer on paintings since 1980.  In that time he has given over 8000 lectures to universities, colleges and art societies.  He was the director of The New Academy of Art Studies for three years and is presesntly at The Study Centre, Christie's course, 'The Art Studies' and other London courses.

This crash course covers three hundred years of great classical music, from the first opera still to be performed today, Claudio Monteverdi's L'Orfeo (1607) through to the work that perhaps more than any other signalled the start of modernism, the ballet The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky (1913).  Progressing through the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras, Sandy discusses what role music played in each, and illustrates how composers went about the process of shaping their works.  A glossary of key terms and list of essential elements of each era is provided, along with a playlist with details of the musical illustrtions used.

Two one hour events with a 20 minute break

The two lectures examine the portraits and careers of history's most nortorious mistresses and courtesans in order to take a generally light hearted look at changing attitudes to sexual morality down the ages.

They also chart the rather complex and ambiguous attitudes of art and society towards the numerous and anonymous working girls at the lower end of the scale. Very much a social history, it places the art carefully in context, revealing many little meanings and nuances and meanings in well known works which might not otherwise not be immediately apparent to the modern eye.

It is, of course, full of scandalous anecdotes and stories, illustrated by sumptuous portraits by first ranked artists from Sir Joshua Reynolds through The Impressionists, Picasso, etc.

This is an unusual and fascinating Special Interest Day. The morning sessions outline the history, explore the terrain and examine the buildings which range from Anasazi Cliff Dwellings and Spanish Missions to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West. En route, there will be log cabins and ‘Victorian’ towns; the morning will end with two 20th century creations – mid-century modernism at Palm Springs and the success of excess at Las Vegas. 

In the afternoon we will look at the art, starting with figurative painters and sculptors like Remington and Russell and moving on to landscape painters like Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) and Thomas Moran (1837-1926). Explorers as well as artists, their paintings do justice to the extraordinary landscapes of the West. They are great names in American Art but hardly known on this side of the Atlantic. 

Roger studied History at Oxford and Fine Art at Leeds. Awarded Churchill Fellowship to travel and study in USA. Former College Vice-Principal who now lectures for University of Liverpool and for Adult Residential Colleges. Organises and leads country house study tours, and tries to find time to do research on British and American Country Houses.

Windsor  Castle is the oldest and largest continuously occupied castle in the world.  

It has been enlarged and modified throughout its 900 year history to reflect the needs, ambitions and styles of various monarchs. As such the castle has evolved from an impregnable fortress into a royal country residence 
which as well as being the Queen's favourite home, is regularly used by her for spectacular state occasions.

The restoration of the castle after the fire of 1992 enabled Her Majesty to continue the development  of the structure.  The lecture shows how today's castle has grown from its 11th century origins and how this evolution relates to the personalities and tastes of its Royal occupants and to the history of  Britain. Four monarchs in particular are shown to have made Windsor Castle what it is today - Edward III in the 1360s, Charles II in the 1670s, George IV in the 1820s and the present Queen.

Windsor Castle: Fire, Restoration and The Queen at Windsor

The fire at Windsor Castle in 1992 is described and illustrated, together with the 
remarkable restoration which was completed five years later.  The Queen commissioned watercolour paintings of the Castle after the fire and after the restoration.  Many of these are shown. The lecture puts the restoration in the context of the Castle's 900 year history.

The way that The Queen and Prince Philip use Windsor Castle is illustrated, including Garter Day processions and the visits of foreign Heads of  State.

LECTURE 1: AN INTRODUCTION TO CHINA'S HISTORY, CULTURE AND CIVILISATION

The first lecture introduces China: its early history, languages and topography of fertile regions, sacred mountains and deserts. In spoken Chinese, China is ‘Zhong Guo’, which translates as ‘The Middle Kingdom’ and expresses the central world position which China occupies in the mind-set of the Chinese.  

LECTURE 2: CHINA FROM THE YUAN DYNASTY TO THE MING DYNASTY (1271-1644)
During the late 13th century, a relentless power appeared on China’s northern frontier in the shape of the invading Mongols, who established the Yuan Dynasty (1278-1368), with its capital at Dadu (modern Beijing).

LECTURE 3: THE QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) TWILIGHT DAYS OF EMPIRE, REVOLUTION AND THE TRIUMPH OF MODERN SHANGHAI
As the Ming Emperors lost the Mandate of Heaven, China witnessed invasion once more, by the Manchus from beyond the Great wall,  who established the Qing Dynasty. The first Emperors of this Dynasty were powerful. They honoured the ancient rites and were major collectors and patrons of art, the 18th century Qianlong Emperor was one of the greatest patrons of art that the world has known.

Members and friends enjoyed this study day, ‘The Romanovs’; Tyrants and Martyrs of Imperial Russia’ The day followed the course of this hard, determined, often brutal dynasty that ruled Russia for over three hundred years. The first session, ‘The Blaspheming Bear’ began the story of the Romanov dynasty with particular emphasis on Peter the Great who founded St Petersburg. The second session, ‘The German Witch’ traced the family through his eccentric daughter Elizabeth, to Catherine the Great, the most powerful of all the Empresses of Russia who had no real claim to the throne. The last session, ‘The Last Romanovs’ followed the dynasty through to the tragic figure of Nicholas II, the last Tsar and one of the most poignant figures in history. We learnt about Rasputin’s extraordinary power over the Tsarina and how he was finally killed but too late to save Nicholas, whose death in a cellar in Ekaterinburg with his wife and children, ended the reign of this turbulent and ill-fated family. Throughout the day, Douglas put the Romanovs’ into the European historical context, showing the close relationships between European ruling houses via intermarriage and by using maps and photos, helped his audience understand Russia’s place in the world during the Romanovs’ reign. He brought his subject alive by his impressive story telling skills, use of humour and showing pictures of people, places and events that held the audience completely fascinated throughout the day.
