The Arts Society Heritage Volunteers help to conserve our heritage both in Britain and in parts of Europe. Conservation and preservation of our heritage are tremendous burdens on the limited resources of museums, National Trust properties, historic houses, libraries and gardens. Volunteers help them in non-specialist but vital ways by caring for collections, recording documents, guiding and stewarding. Heritage Volunteers help to keep them accessible for all. Many of our members are also volunteers in many heritage and cultural sectors including National Trust, Savill Gardens and Egham Museum amongst others. THE ROYAL SCHOOL, WINDSOR GREAT PARK - now completed Our Heritage Team have started our exciting and interesting project at The Royal School Windsor Great Park. Work is underway to document and examine artefacts given to the School by Queen Mary and examine records and books at the school including a Victorian punishment book. ] The project is almost complete. 9 members have been attending the school and taking photos of the individual items in the Curios Cabinets in the school which contain artefacts brought back from Royal trips at home and away. There are 8 cabinets with over 200 items, everything from dolls to handbags and other miscellaneous items. There are also much larger items on a table and collections of coins and medals under the table. We all attached our photos to templates which showed the item number and in which cabinet it could be found. These are now complete, in a file to be given to the school. More information on Cumberland Lodge here We handed over our Audit of the artworks at Cumberland Lodge to the Principal, Ed Newell on 27th June 2024. The project was a mammoth task, as was organising the audits and it was good to see so many of our volunteers there for the handover. Thank you so much to all the Cumberland Lodge auditors. As the project at The Royal School draws to its conclusion, our Society has commenced an interesting and rewarding project at Cumberland Lodge, Windsor Great Park. The project, which started in January 2021, involves compiling an inventory of the art work at The Lodge. Amongst the artwork is a collection of lithographs of the Crimean War, illustrated by William Simpson (1823-1899). Situated in the Hudson Corridor, the coloured, detailed and atmospheric lithographs provide graphic illustrations of the conflict in locations which have become more relevant as the war in Ukraine continues. Other artworks include two heraldic shields belonging to the Wintour Family and highlight a very important historical event - The Gun Powder Plot Sir George was last in the Wintour of Huddington Court. His Baronetcy was created in 1642. As he had no heirs it became extinct on his death and was passed to the brother of his first wife, The 11th Earl of Shrewsbury. Sir George’s Grandfather, Robert Wintour and Great Uncle, Thomas Wintour, were among the group of Catholics who planned the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 to blow up the House of Lords and (Protestant) King James VI and his ministers during the state opening of Parliament. They were tried and executed in January 1606. Our work continues and the Society will welcome new volunteers for the project.
